The “Harry Potter Spider”

This amblypygi is a unique arthropod in the class of Arachnida. It is in the arachnid class, just like the spidrs we are all used to, but Amblypygi are not true spiders or true scorpions, but a distinct arachnid order. (see link) They are found in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. Some species are subterranean; many are nocturnal. During the day, they may hide under logs, bark, stones, or leaves. They prefer a humid environment. They are very reclusive. The huge modified palps are used to grab and hold prey, usually insects, which they detect with their long modified front legs, which act as feelers.

The one in this frame is about 14” long including the front legs. It’s actiual body is only 3 inches long, but it has large fierce looking thorny palps in front of its mandibles. This arthropod was used in the Harry Potter movies as a model for the spiders upon which the cruciatus curse was performed. http://harrypotter.wikia.com/wiki/Spider
